Over the last two years, one of my greatest obcessions has been the film work of Italian Genre director, Mario Bava. One of the true underrated masters of 60s and 70s Genre cinema.
I have a theory or suspicion, which I can't confirm, that many of the Cinemaphotographers who worked on The X-Files, may have been influenced by his visual style. Although many have acknowledged a heavy film noir look to many episodes, there are subtle hints that some directors took a page or so from Bava.
Here's a couple of great sites to visit, if your interested.http://members.tripod.com/mariobava/http://www.sensesofcinema.com/contents/directors/04/bava.html
Of course, Tim Lucas is the real authority on Bava's work, so you might want to check out his page.http://www.bavabook.blogspot.com/
