Season 1

Season 1

Introduction: The Truth Within the Shadows

Season one was the blueprint, it was the foundation for everything that would follow. Chris Carter's initial inspiration for the show came from the brief-lived seventies television series, 'Kolchak: The Night Stalker'. By having the setting of the show be within FBI, Chris Carter eliminated most of the restrictions that caused 'Kolchak' to last only a season. Mulder and Scully would seek out the paranormal phenomenons they uncovered while Kolchak accidentally stumbled upon them. The origins of Fox Mulder's name came from Carter's past of course; 'Fox' was the name of a childhood friend and 'Mulder' was the maiden name of his mother. 'Scully' took her name from the Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully. The use of numbers are inside comments and jokes that would be common throughout the series history. The Production company name 10:13 was taken from Chris Carters birth date, and the numbers that appear on the clock at the end of the pilot episode, 11:21 is the birth date for Carter's wife Dori.
